Easy Cast Iron Pizza

Food

Jump to Recipe

Happy Friday! In the Sutton household, if we are eating in, Friday nights are ~*~pizza nights~*~! While, sometimes that means we are feeling tired and lazy and we cook up a couple of frozen pizzas, sometimes we order from Pizza Hut, but sometimes we have pizza our favorite way {semi-homemade} cast iron pizza!

How We Make Easy Cast Iron Pizza

It’s really not hard to make at all, but we love the fresh taste, being able to customize it to whatever we are in the mood for, and the crust that this pizza gets in the cast iron pan is AMAZING. Y’all know that I love my cast iron pan, and for this pizza, I use a 13.25 inch Lodge cast iron pan.

I personally use the pizza dough located in the deli refrigerator of Publix. Fridays are our easy dinner nights, so I genuinely don’t have any interest in making homemade dough lol! Plus the Publix one is always so consistently good, that I see no reason in mixing it up 🙂

For cheese, I have tried fresh, whole-milk mozzarella and part-skim mozzarella, and part-skim works much better in this scenario because it browns up faster. Also, with the fresh, whole milk mozzarella, you tend to get more oil on the top of the pizza. I think cheese tastes best if it is freshly shredded, so I prefer to get a ball of fresh part-skim mozzarella and shred that up to top my pizza with.

It’s important to have a timer handy and to move quick once you turn the heat on so that you don’t burn the bottom of the pizza. And also don’t add too much sauce onto the dough. You don’t want to make it soggy!

I think my favorite topping combination that I have made with this pizza is pepperoni, chopped bell pepper (that I charred slightly in a pan), roasted garlic cloves, fresh basil, and Parmesan cheese <3

Cast Iron Pizza

Cuisine Italian
Keyword casual, dinner, pizza

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough
  • 2-3 tbsp pizza sauce
  • mozzarella cheese
  • toppings of choice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Set pizza dough out to rise for about 30-45 minutes

  2. Mix together the olive oil and the Italian seasoning together in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush the oil mixture on the bottom and sides of the cast iron pan, reserving a small amount to brush on the pizza crust

  3. Toss out your pizza dough and then lay it into the cast iron pan, spreading it out so that it covers the entire cast iron pan and goes slightly up the sides

  4. Put the cast-iron on the stove and turn the stove on medium heat

  5. After about 2 minutes on the stove, spread your pizza sauce onto the dough, and top with cheese and any toppings. Also, brush remaining oil onto the crust

  6. Turn stove onto broil and let preheat while pizza cooks on stove for another 3 minutes

  7. Put pizza in the stove with the broiler on for about 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly

  8. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes before cutting into slices

My dough came out a little undercooked on the inside (where the topping cover the dough). The outside was perfect though(crust and bottom). I’m thinking this is my fault for making it a little thick (I like thick crust pizzas). So when I try it again, I think I may pop the crust in the oven on a quick broil for a few moments before put it back on the stove to decorate and THEN popping it back in the oven. Hoping this will allow the dough to cook better. All in all, aside from that hiccup that may or may not be my fault (lol) this recipe was great and worked well!

All you need is a can of biscuit dough and oil to make the favorite breakfast of my childhood!
Once you pop open your can of biscuit dough and separate the individual biscuits, you can cut a hole in the center and GENTLY add them to oil heated to 350-375 degrees. CAREFULLY flip over once brown on one side and once both sides are perfectly golden, transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil.
Of course you can’t go without toppings! Our favorites are cinnamon sugar, powdered, and strawberry glazed, but you could make chocolate frosting, vanilla frosting, or even jelly filled! The possibilities are endless when the doughnuts are this easy to make 😊
My toddler absolutely loved this first day of summer treat, let me know if you try it! #toddlermom #funbreakfast #whimsy #whimsicalchildhood #recipe

Motherhood is the greatest gift and hardest job I’ve ever had. Being both a ‘forever mom’ and a foster mom has formed me into a stronger, more passionate, more empathetic, and creative version of myself. My life and work before kids felt important and meaningful, but raising kind, caring kids to impact their future communities and world feels like my most important purpose yet ❤️
