Getting an eyebrow tint is always something I wanted to try. My eyebrows are naturally brown and match my hair color fairly well, but there are always a number of blonde hairs that I wished were darker to make my eyebrows appear fuller.
The thing is, getting an eyebrow tint done professionally costs about $10-20 per visit (and you go about every 6-8 weeks). While that’s not wildly expensive, I’m also kinda cheap sometimes, especially when I know I can do something myself for cheaper. And with COVID-19 still continuing to be an issue and keeping things shut down, it’s not like I could go get one done anyway.
So if you get your eyebrows tinted and are looking for a cheaper alternative or you’ve never had it done but want some darker, fuller-appearing brows, have I got a hack for you!
Men’s beard dye.
I know it sounds kind of crazy, but you can safely dye/tint your eyebrows at home with men’s beard dye. A box of beard dye will set you back about $7-10 and you’ll get about 6 months to a years worth of eyebrow applications from that ONE box. Pretty cost effective!
Here’s a before and after of mine (I use the dark brown shade of Just for Men beard dye):
It’s pretty subtle (since my hair is already a bit dark to start), but I can definitely tell a difference in how full the tail of my eyebrow appears.
There aren’t too many colors to choose from. If you’re blonde, I would probably go for light brown or light medium brown. Dark brunettes like me can get away with medium dark-brown or dark brown (I personally went with dark brown). If you’re a lighter brunette, medium brown will probably be your best bet. And you’ve got black hair, you can decide between true black and jet black! But if you’re stuck between deciding between two colors, just pick the lightest one to start. You can always buy another shade for $8 and try again next time.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Just For Men beard dye
- Angled eyeliner brush (This one is under $0.75— Have you ever bought something so cheap off Amazon??)
- Vaseline
- Q-tips
- Rag
- Tweezers
Step 1
Start with a clean face. Remove any make up and pull your hair back!
Step 2
Use a q-tip to apply Vaseline to create a border around your eyebrow. In my experience, it’s not going to dye your skin, but you don’t want to dye any peach-fuzz around your eyebrows and face, and doing this is going to help protect it.
Step 3
Throw away the included brush in the box. You don’t need it. Pull out the included tray and add a pea sized amount each of the developed and the color base. Break a q-tip in half and use the broken end to mix the two together.
Step 4
Apply the dye to your eyebrows using the eyeliner brush starting in the arch of your eyebrow using small upward strokes and following the natural shape of your eyebrow. Really try and coat all of your eyebrow hairs! First work your way to the tail of the eyebrow and then work on the inner brow. Use a clean q-tip to clean up any mistakes as you go.
Step 5
Wait 5 minutes from the time you finish. It will start to look DARK… don’t freak out, this isn’t going to be the final color.
Step 6
Wet your rag with water (I also add a little bit of my regular face wash) and wipe of the dye starting with the eyebrow you started tinting first.
Step 7
Reapply and repeat if you want it a little darker or you missed any areas, other wise, clean up any rouge tinted hairs with tweezers.
Enjoy your new look!
