DIY Built-Ins with IKEA Bookshelves: A 2 Year Update

DIY· Home

These DIY “built-ins” or entertainment center using IKEA Billy Bookcases remains one of my favorite DIY home projects I have done and also one of my most popular here on the blog! If you want the details of how I did this project, you can read the original post here:

DIY Faux “Built-Ins” with IKEA Billy Bookcases

It’s been almost 2 years since we did this project, so I wanted to give a little update on if I still like it, if I would do anything differently, how it’s holding up, etc.

Here are our faux built-ins today!:

DIY Built-Ins with IKEA Bookshelves

Can you tell we acquired quite a few plants and read quite a bit more over quarantine? 😉

Do I still like how it turned out/fits the space?

Still love it! This living room needed something like built-ins or an entertainment center and this was the most cost effective way while still keeping it simple in my opinion. It was hard to find an entertainment center (much less custom built-ins) that we liked for under $600, so I’m super happy with the decision that we made to DIY it.

It matches our white kitchen cabinets really well and since we have an open concept living room/kitchen, I think it worked out really well. Since we don’t have a fireplace in this house, I like that it gave more of a focal point to the room.

Anything you would do differently?

Part of me wishes that I had run the cords for the TV through the wall, but since I have the cord cover and I painted it to match the wall color, it honestly doesn’t bother me much at all.

Is the quality good/how is it holding up?

It’s holding up actually really well! I obviously didn’t do a perfect job with this project! You can read the original post to see an area that we cover up with strategically placed basket for example haha

But we always get compliments on it when people come into our home for the first time. It fits our style really well and we like being able to show off some of our plants and some of the books we have been reading recently. It also gives us more storage in the living room which is something that will be great if we have kids down the road for toys and things

I also really love some of the little decor items we have strategically found and picked out for the bookcases in the last couple years.

Shelf decor

And in case you need another reminder:

This was our living room the first 6+ months we lived in our house. Big empty wall, looking pretty sad 🙁

This was how things looked once I completed the project and how I initially decorated the shelves:

This is how I have our shelves decorated today. There’s still a few pieces that I want to eventually swap out, but I really like the way it is decorated and looks now!

Hi! What kind of floor do you have? We have laminate but I’ve read the floors will buckle with built-ins. Do you have any insight? Thanks!!

Hi! We have LVP flooring, but I think maybe laminate can buckle underneath heavy objects if it’s not installed properly– perhaps that’s why? We haven’t had that issue with our vinyl flooring around our built-ins (although we have had it buckle in other areas of our house from moisture).

Because I had gestational diabetes in my pregnancy Because I had gestational diabetes in my pregnancy with my son, I’m being carb-conscious while I wait to take my glucose test at about 24 weeks pregnant. I’m roughly following the guidelines I was given back in 2022, but obviously not monitoring blood sugars at this time since I don’t officially have a diagnosis at this time. Hopefully this gives you some meal and snack ideas if you are being carb-conscious or have gestational diabetes! #gestationaldiabetes #pregnancy #whatiatetoday
I had diet-controlled gestational diabetes with my I had diet-controlled gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy, so once I found I was pregnant with my second child, my doctor asked me to go ahead and be “carb-conscious” and try to roughly follow the diet while I wait to do my glucose test at ~24 weeks.
Since I’m not checking my blood sugars rn, I’m trying my best to count carbs, adjust my portions, and make low-carb swaps where I can, with the knowledge that IF I get a diagnosis this pregnancy, I may have to adjust this diet further to reach my blood sugar goals. I’m also trying to make my diet as nutritious as possible for myself and baby but in a realistic way! #gestationaldiabetes #whatieatinadayrealistic #pregnancy

I do think this is a good way to ease myself back into the diet in case I do test positive again. I’m still letting myself enjoy what I want rn but I’m adjusting my portions and making low-carb swaps where I can! Also trying to make this diet more nutritious, but clearly my food aversions are still hitting, so I’m just trying my best 🤪 #gestationaldiabetes #whatieatinadayrealistic #pregnancy
baby #2 loading… ❤️ After having a difficult firs baby #2 loading… ❤️

After having a difficult first pregnancy and difficult postpartum, getting to a place mentally to feel ready for another pregnancy/postpartum took more time than I ever expected, and consumed me with a lot of anxiety. And then I faced conflicting feelings of sadness of not having the smaller age gap we originally hoped/wanted for our kids. Thankful for a supportive husband, 📣 THERAPY 🗣️, prayer, and friends who listen, to work through the hard stuff, get to a better mental space, and to feel peace to do this again.

This baby is truly so loved already and we cannot wait!!

Let’s cook some raspberries up and make some raspb Let’s cook some raspberries up and make some raspberry-fudge pudding popsicles with a secret healthy ingredient 🤫🥑

RASPBERRY FUDGE POPSICLES 🥑🍫
Raspberry Part:
-~6 oz of fresh/frozen raspberries
-2 tbsp of sugar (I used coconut sugar)
•add raspberries and sugar to a saucepan over medium heat. Cook and let boil for about 5-7 minutes, stirring often to get a jammy consistency

Chocolate Part
1 avocado
1/2 cup milk
2-3 tbsp cocoa powder (depending on how chocolatey you want it!)
Splash of vanilla
Pinch of salt
Maple syrup to taste
•add all to a blender and blend until smooth

•layer chocolate and raspberry portions in a popsicle mold. You can use a toothpick or wooden skewer to swirl the layer a bit before adding sticks and freezing for at least 6 hours
•you may need to run warm water outside of your molds to help remove the popsicles when you’re ready to enjoy ❤️

This makes 6 popsicles with the molds I have but it may vary depending on the size you are using. You also may have leftover raspberry sauce!! It’s really good on Greek yogurt for a parfait or on ice cream 😉 #healthydessert #kidrecipes #toddlermom #easyrecipe
