A bit over a month ago now, our sweet boy Theo celebrated his first trip around the sun! It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year now since he joined our family, and yet at the same time, it also feels like he’s always been a part of it.
We had a big party planned to celebrate his birthday, but unfortunately, germs had other plans and he got sick with some kind of virus a couple of days before the party 🙁 A fever was pretty much the only symptom he had, so we didn’t really know what exactly he had; but since we had a lot of friends planning on coming over with their little one’s, we didn’t want to leave anything to chance and had to cancel his party to friends the day before.
We ended up just having a small celebration with us, both sets of Theo’s grandparents, my brother, and my aunt and uncle. Despite the scaled down party, I wanted to share some of the little details for his “First Trip Around The Sun” theme 1st birthday party in case you are looking for ideas!
I used this free template from Canva to design our invite. I made just a couple of little changes to the original design, and then had them printed at the UPS store for pretty inexpensive!
I think they turned out SO cute and I was really happy with them. Especially for being a free template on Canva.
We did scale down some of the food since the crowd size was significantly reduced last minute, but we made:
I thought about using a star and moon cookie cutter to cut the watermelon to go along with the first trip around the sun/space theme, but ended up not last minute. Some other ideas that i ended up not doing because of the last minute changes were things like moon pies, rice crispy treats shaped like moons and stars, and decorating his cupcakes like this:
We ordered our cake from Publix and I could not be happier with how it turned out! The one we picked is called “Blue Stardust” and only comes in a 9″ round, so we ordered a dozen cupcakes to go with it.
The cake itself was $40 which I thought was a good price given how great it turned out!
The cake itself was really delicious too and had a ton of layers!
If you let Publix Bakery know that you are getting the cake for a 1st birthday, they will give you a smash cake for free! This was fun to put in front of Theo and give him the opportunity to go crazy and dig into the cake for some cute pictures (he didn’t since he didn’t feel good but we tried haha)
This was my favorite detail we included for Theo’s 1st birthday! It still felt like it went along with the space kind of theme, but was so meaningful. We had family write Theo a note or letter to go in a time capsule that he can open on his 18th birthday.
It made me so emotional to write him a letter knowing that he’s going to read it as an adult. It’s hard to even conceptualize!!
Despite the day not going exactly how I imagined it, it was still so great to celebrate our boy with family. Hopefully this post gives you some ideas if you are planning a 1 year birthday for your own little one!
