At a friend’s baby shower a couple years ago, a friend was gifted with what the gift-giver named an “Oh Sh!t Kit”. The idea of this kit is that you keep the basket in your car for whenever you are out with baby. When you inevitably forget to bring an essential or find yourself in a pickle (example: those notorious newborn blowouts) that make you say “oh sh!t”– this kit has you covered! Since that friend’s child was born, I cannot tell you the amount of times she has told me that she has relied on something in that kit. And now that I have a kid of my own, there have definitely been moments where I thought I had something in the diaper bag and don’t and am panicking a little on what to do. I decided that the kit was such a good baby shower gift idea or gift idea for a new mom, so I made it recently for a friend who was expecting.
I made a cute little tag (I have it at the bottom of this post if you would like to print it and use it for yourself for free!) and threw everything into a cheap fabric bin. I have some ideas for items throughout this post if you are unsure of what to put in. It comes out to be such a funny, but practical baby shower gift idea!
P.S. Check your local dollar store or the travel section of Target for some of these items! You might not be able to find everything you need, but they often have at least some items that would be great in this kit for a better price.
Obviously for any diapers that need to be changed while out!
These diapers are great and are actually the cheapest option I found on Amazon!
This was one of those things that I didn’t think to keep in our diaper bag during our very first time out of the house with Theo. We went to the lactation specialist and his outfit got wet. The lactation specialist gave me SUCH a hard time about not having an extra outfit with me, and now it’s something I always have!
These are the only ones that Theo will use, but every kid is different!
This is especially great for outfits that you really love, to help prevent stains from setting in before you can get home and wash them!
This is another thing I didn’t keep with me in the beginning until I had an experience that made me add it to our diaper bag! Nothing worse than dealing with a blowout and then wondering what in the world to do with the dirty outfit, because you certainly don’t want it to get over everything else.
These swaddle blankets rock because they can act as a burp cloth, a blanket, a swaddle, and a nursing cover! This print is just too cute too!
This is so great to have for many different scenarios. If your kid gets food or a mess everywhere, there’s a huge spit up in the car seat, you end up in a place that is dirty, or you need to wipe down anything before or after baby touches it!
A diaper rash doesn’t normally just pop up in a couple of hours, but having this in our emergency bag for when we go on trips has saved me on several occasions! I often forget to pack it for trips.
Because that pacifier will definitely be thrown onto a dirty floor and then you are panicking wondering how to calm down the fussy kid
Sometimes we need to do a diaper change in a place with zero changing tables or in a place with questionable cleaning habits, and having a changing pad makes me feel a bit better.
This one is going to be more-so for kids 6 months and up, but I always keep a pouch in my bag now for snack emergencies 🙂
This one is going to depend on if you know the parents are planning on doing formula or not!
