I have been wanting to give our boring, builder-grade half bathroom a makeover for well over a year now, and this makeover has truly been over a year in the making! We bought our new build house 5 years ago now and despite not loving the millennial grey everywhere, we didn’t do ANY painting in the house until this past year. The Agreeable Grey by SW paint we have everywhere isn’t bad and is (true to its name) agreeable with most decor, but our half-bath was particularly boring and I really wanted to make it a unique, fun small space and give it more of my decor style. I think it ended up with a very classy, timeless, transitional look that kind of reminds me of what a half-bath might look in a Nancy Myers movie. 🙂
Mirror
The half bathroom makeover starts with this mirror! I got the mirror from Kirkland’s (the home store, not the Costco brand). It’s often on sale for under $100 and reminds me a lot of the infamous Anthropologie mirror. I bought the mirror over a year ago after I fell in love with the Anthro one, and when I saw the Kirkland one in black and on sale, I thought it would go well with the nickel/chrome finishes in our house (as opposed to brass or gold). It unfortunately didn’t go super well with the builder-grade light fixture, which brings us to our next topic…
Lighting
Finding a new light fixture took me over a year. Partially because I have a kid and was distracted with other things and would take long periods of time where I stopped looking, and partially because I had a hard time finding one that had a classic look, not too farmhouse-esque, wasn’t a bazillion $$$, and was black or nickel to match the other finishes. I finally found this one from Amazon and it’s under $40.
Wallpaper
Deciding on wallpaper was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. We ordered several samples
Here’s some close ups of the wallpaper pattern:
Because of the size of the room, I knew the wallpaper was not going to line up perfectly. Due to my lack of inexperience with wallpapering, I made the mistake of the mismatch in the middle of the wall rather than an inconspicuous corner (oops) BUT this wallpaper is so busy, that I feel like it’s actually quite difficult to notice where it doesn’t line up unless you are looking for it!:
Paint
I ended up painting the lower half of the wall in Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore. I originally painted the bottom half of the wall in the color Splendid Blue by Sherwin Williams. I thought doing a lighter blue would complement the wallpaper, but it ended up not looking great. Van Deusen is not a perfect match to the blue of the wallpaper, it’s a bit toned down and greyer. I found that Sapphire by Clark + Kensington was an almost perfect color match to the blue in the wallpaper, but it felt too vibrant for the space.
