DIY Felt Name Pennant Flag (Free Canva and No Cricut Needed!)

DIY

If you have been eyeing custom name pennants on Etsy for your kiddo’s bedroom, you are NOT alone! We created a fun vintage, Americana themed big kid bedroom for our toddler late last year, but the walls have been slow to fill because I have been indecisive about what exactly to put up! Well I FINALLY added some things, including a little DIY name pennant flag!

I did a full YouTube tutorial on how to create this cute custom name pennant, which you may find easier to follow, but I wanted to type up some instructions as well!

This little pennant ended up being so easy to make with the free version of Canva and no Cricut required! I had Theo pick out the colors of felt that he wanted, so this craft ended up only costing about $3!

How to Make a Felt Name Pennant

You can do this on the app version of Canva (iPad or iPhone) or on a computer.
In a blank Canva document (I did a blank US Letter [Landscape] 11 in x 8.5 in), click “elements” and type in “triangle” to insert into your document.

I changed my color fill to white and the line width to 1. You can use the turn button to rotate the triangle and use the dots at the corners to resize the triangle into a pennant-like shape that fills up the majority of the document

On the left side menu, press “apps” and type in “Textsmith”– this a free alternative to “TypeCraft”; however, if you do have Canva Pro, using TypeCraft might be a slightly easier alternative for doing this!

Once Textsmith opens, you will type in the name under “your text” and select your font. I went with “Jua”, but do whatever style you like! Then in the box under “edit your text” you will use the dots to shape your letters into a triangle that will fit into your triangle. This may take a couple of tries- you can always press “add to design” resize it to see if the shape is right, and then make tweaks in Textsmith!

Once you get your pennant looking the way you want it, you can print it out on a printer or you can use an iPad to trace everything onto a blank piece of paper if you don’t have a printer (I printed two copies for ease!)

Once printed, you can carefully and precisely cut out your triangle and flip it over backwards onto one sheet of felt. Carefully trace out the triangle and then cut out the felt.

Then precisely cut out your letters. I flipped them over backwards onto another sheet of felt and repeated the process of tracing and then cutting out the letters.

I used a different color for this next step, but you could use the same color as the letters if you wanted. I used the triangle as a guide to determine length and how wide I wanted a piece that would run along the shorter border of the triangle. I traced this out and cut it.

I also used the red color to cut out some small rectangles for tabs and some small diamonds and stars to use as decorations.

I used a hot glue gun to attach everything, but you could use fabric glue instead!

Let me know if you make a pennant flag and how it turns out!

Thank you so much for these instructions! I really wanted to make name pennants and figured Canva would be a good resource but could not figure out how to get the font to work with the triangle shape. This was so helpful!

I grabbed some bricks from @loweshomeimprovement and used glue to secure a wooden house on top. Then my toddler foraged for pinecones, straw, sticks, leaves, and put them in the holes of the bricks and inside the house. We planted plants around the house, and made a cute little sign to go on top! We also made some bee/bug watering cups out of some shells we collected during our last beach trip! My toddler loves checking on our bug hotel and filling up the bug cups to make sure they have plenty of water 😊
