5 Must-Reads to Help You Break Free From A Book Slump

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch: Sci-Fi/Mystery Thriller

Official Synopsis:

Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the kidnapper knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man he’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this life or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how will Jason make it back to the family he loves?

From the bestselling author Blake Crouch, Dark Matter is a mind-bending thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

I read Dark Matter probably 6 years ago and I still think about it often. It was the book that pulled me out of a DEEP book slump and ultimately got me reading again. My husband and I both read it and it is one of our favorite books we ever read.

Icebreaker by Hannah Grace: Romance

Official Synopsis:

Anastasia Allen has worked her entire life for a shot at Team USA. It looks like everything is going according to plan when she gets a full scholarship to the University of California, Maple Hills and lands a place on their competitive figure skating team.

Nothing will stand in her way, not even the captain of the hockey team, Nate Hawkins.

Nate’s focus as team captain is on keeping his team on the ice. Which is tricky when a facilities mishap means they are forced to share a rink with the figure skating team—including Anastasia, who clearly can’t stand him.

But when Anastasia’s skating partner faces an uncertain future, she may have to look to Nate to take her shot.

Sparks fly, but Anastasia isn’t worried… because she could never like a hockey player, right?

Fair warning: Icebreaker is a little bit spicy with the romance, but that was what made it such a fun read! I wouldn’t classify it as YA because it is definitely a little mature, but the main characters are in college, so the relationship parts are not super mature. Still a great fun book that I loved!

The One by John Marrs: Mystery Thriller/Science-Fiction

Official Synopsis:

A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.

That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…

I wouldn’t consider The One as much science-fiction as Dark Matter, but has an element of it. It is mostly mystery and it’s SO good. Every moment of the day that I wasn’t reading this book, I was thinking about it. I still find myself thinking about it even a year after I read it! If a book has you thinking about it when you aren’t reading it and leaves you thinking about it long after you finish, it is a good sign that you are being cured of your book slump!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Historical Fiction

Official Synopsis:

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

EVERYONE I know who reads this book gives it 5 stars. I have yet to meet someone who didn’t like it. It has a bit of romance to it, although I would generally classify it as historical fiction. Incredible book if you’ve never read it!

ACOTAR Series by Sarah J Maas: Fantasy/Romance

Official Synopsis:

When 19-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin – one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it… or doom Tamlin – and his world – forever.

Okay you know I had to include ACOTAR! But if you enjoy fantasy and/or romance and you haven’t yet read the ACOTAR series, where have you been??? To be completely honest, these books are LONG. And the first one is not my favorite book. But you have to read it in order to read book 2 (A Court of Mist and Fury), which was an easy 5 star rating from me. A Court of Mist and Fury actually put me in a book hangover (not to be confused with a book slump 😉 )
