After reading 10 books in October, I should have expected that I wouldn’t be able to outdo myself again! I read 5 books this past month for us to chat about. We have a non-fiction, a literary fiction, a romance, a fantasy-romance, and the most insane ALIEN spicy romance (that I’m terrified to even share lol).
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez
FIVE STARS!!! Beautiful, fun, dynamic. Just for the Summer was everything I could ever want in a romance. I actually just did a full review of Just for the Summer if you want to know more about my thoughts on it!
Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon
Now listen… I cannot believe I have to admit that I read Ice Planet Barbarians, but I genuinely enjoyed reading it haha
@saraannsutton Might just black out and read the whole Ice Planet Barbarian series #spicybooktok #bookhumor #romancebooks #booktok #iceplanetbarbarians ♬ But the parasites want the candy – moe.donut
My friend Sarah and I actually recorded our conversation about it after we read it at the same time. It’s kind of a funny read. If you want a crazy book to talk about at your next book club, this is one to read haha
I still have no idea what to actually rate this because it’s a wild and unhinged concept, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. Now fair warning, this is like a 4/5 on the spice scale and there are some TWs to be aware of, so be sure to research and read at your own risk.
Grit by Angela Duckworth
Grit is one that I actually did the audiobook for, but I have a physical copy because my husband read it years ago! Overall I liked the book and I thought it was interesting. And like, yeah, it convinced me: grittiness is important! But I would have appreciated more information on HOW to become grittier.
4/5 stars
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
I hate to say it!!!! But I didn’t like this one. I can appreciate that The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store was beautifully written, but I really had the hardest time getting into it. NOTHING happened for the longest time and it felt like it was a lot of lead up an backstory for nothing. ALSO!! This book definitely started off giving off a mystery vibe, so I initially intrigued but then it barely addresses it again!
3/5 stars
Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
Once I started reading Once Upon a Broken Heart, I realized that this was likely more of YA “romantasy”, which is probablyyyyy why I didn’t love it. Just not my fave! I thought it was just flat. I have heard that the second one redeems it, so maybe I should keep going? TBD!
2.75/5 stars
